What is Viokace?

Viokace is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Aptalis Pharma U.S. Inc. It is a combination of digestive enzymes (porcine-derived lipases, proteases, and amylases). Viokace is used in combination with a proton pump inhibitor in adults for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency due to chronic pancreatitis (swelling of the pancreas) or pancreatectomy.

The safety and effectiveness of Viokace in pediatric patients have not been established. Use in pediatric patients may result in a reduction in growth due to tablet degradation in the gastric environment. Delayed-release capsules should be used for pediatric patients.

What doses of Viokace are available?

Viokace is available in tablet formulation, in the following doses: 10,440 USP units of lipase; 39,150 USP units of protease; 39,150 USP units of amylase, 20,880 USP units of lipase; 78,300 USP units of protease; 78,300 USP units of amylase.

Viokace is not interchangeable with any other pancrelipase products. Viokace tablets should be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew tablets. Dosing should not exceed the dosage set by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Consensus Conferences Guidelines.

Initiate with 500 lipase units/kg of body weight per meal up to a maximum of 2,500 lipase units/kg of body weight per meal (or less than or equal to 10,000 lipase units/kg of body weight per day), or less than 4,000 lipase units/g fat ingested per day. Dosage should be based on clinical symptoms, the degree of steatorrhea, and the fat content of the diet.

Store Viokace at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets. Viokace contraindications

You should not use Viokace if you:

• Are allergic to the active ingredient pancrelipase
• Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Viokace

Talk to your doctor before using Viokace if you:

• Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Viokace
• Have gout
• Have renal impairment
• Have hyperuricemia
• Have a known allergy to proteins of porcine origin
• Have trouble swallowing tablets
• Are lactose intolerant
• Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
• Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – It is not known if Viokace passes into your breastmilk
