What is Vistaril?

Vistaril is a medication used to treat a number of conditions. As an antihistamine (a type of drug used to treat allergic reactions), it can be prescribed to children and adults to reduce itching caused by allergic reactions. It has been used to treat other skin conditions like contact dermatitis and can also reduce nausea caused by a range of conditions, including travel sickness. Vistaril also affects your nervous system and can be prescribed to adults to treat anxiety and tension.

The medication is taken orally, most often as a capsule or a liquid (oral suspension). While usually taken three to four times a day, the dose will vary depending on your circumstances and the condition you’re taking it for.

Vistaril active ingredient

The active ingredient in Vistaril is called hydroxyzine. When taken orally, hydroxyzine is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. Its effects can be felt in as little as 15 to 30 minutes. Once in your blood, hydroxyzine stops histamine from working; a substance produced by your immune system that causes allergic symptoms.

Hydroxyzine also affects your central nervous system (your brain and spinal column). It can suppress activity in certain regions of your nervous system, reducing anxiety and acting as a mild sedative.

Vistaril side effects & Vistaril drug interactions

Possible side effects of Vistaril include drowsiness, slurred speech, dizziness, blurred vision, a faster heartbeat, stomach problems, and fever and flu-like symptoms.

If you experience an allergic reaction, severe blistering, tremors or convulsions, heart rhythm changes, trouble breathing, and loss of consciousness, seek medical attention immediately.

This isn’t the full list of all side effects Vistaril can cause. You can find more details on the side effects in the patient leaflet that comes with your Vistaril. If you have any concerns about Vistaril’s side effects, talk to your physician or a pharmacist.

Vistaril and other medications can interact. This can interfere with the way the medications work and can make side effects more likely. Don’t take Vistaril if you’re taking any of the following:

  • Medications for heart problems or high blood pressure
  • Antibiotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Medications to treat fungal infections
  • Malaria medications
  • Cancer treatments, such as toremifene or vandetanib

These aren’t all the medications that can interact with Vistaril. See the leaflet that comes with your Vistaril for a full list of drug interactions. Make sure you tell your prescribing physician about all medications you’re taking, including any supplements.
