What is Vivjoa?

Vivjoa (oteseconazole capsules) are manufactured by Mycovia Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Vivjoa is classed as an azole antifungal. It has FDA approval (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) to reduce the risk of chronic yeast infections of the vagina (recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis, RVVC) in females with a history of RVVC.

A vaginal yeast infection is caused by a fungus called candida. Symptoms of RVVC include vaginal itching, burning, inflammation, abnormal vaginal discharge, and painful sexual intercourse or urination, causing severe discomfort and pain. Vivjoa is recommended in 2 dosage regimens. One with Vivjoa only, and the other in combination with fluconazole.

What doses of Vivjoa are available?

Vivjoa is available in capsule form, in the following doses: 150 mg.

Vivjoa active ingredients

The active ingredient of Vivjoa is oteseconazole. It is classed as a BCRP (breast cancer resistance protein) inhibitor.

Vivjoa side effects

The most common side effects of Vivjoa in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Headache and nausea

In rare instances, Vivjoa can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Embryo-fetal toxicity – Vivjoa is not recommended for use by females of reproductive potential, and in pregnant or lactating women due to risks to the unborn baby or breastfed infant

Vivjoa drug interactions

Vivjoa can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Rosuvastatin
  • Prazosin
  • Cimetidine
  • Sulfasalazine
  • Zidovudine, lamivudine

Vivjoa contraindications

You should not use Vivjoa if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient oteseconazole
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Vivjoa
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – Based on animal studies, Vivjoa may cause fetal harm
  • Women who are of reproductive potential
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – It is not known if Vivjoa passes into your breastmilk

Talk to your doctor before using Vivjoa if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Vivjoa
  • Have kidney problems
  • Have liver problems

Vivjoa is the trademark brand name for oteseconazole manufactured by Mycovia Pharmaceuticals, Inc. A generic version of oteseconazole is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Vivjoa savings through NiceRx.
