What is Welchol?

Welchol is a medication used with diet and exercise to lower both “bad” cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Specifically, it’s used to:

  • Reduce blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes
  • Reduce “bad” (LDL) cholesterol levels in adults with high levels of fat in their blood (primary hyperlipidemia)
  • Reduce “bad” (LDL) cholesterol levels in boys, and in girls who have had a menstrual period, aged 10 and above who have heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (a genetic disorder that causes high cholesterol)

Type 2 diabetes is a condition where you have high blood sugar levels most of the time. Once you eat, your body starts to digest your food. During this process, sugar is absorbed into your blood to be transported around your body, so it can be delivered to the cells that need it for energy. A hormone called insulin helps your cells absorb the sugar from your blood. If you have type 2 diabetes, you may not produce enough insulin, you may become resistant to insulin, or both. This limits the amount of sugar your cells can absorb and causes your blood sugar to be too high. Over time this can cause serious health problems, including nerve damage, heart disease, strokes, kidney failure, blindness, and poor blood flow that can lead to amputations.

There are a range of ways to treat type 2 diabetes. These include getting more exercise, changing your diet, losing weight, and by taking a medication that can help lower your blood sugar like Welchol. Welchol is often used alongside other diabetes medications, like metformin. It can reduce the damage caused by type 2 diabetes and help you overcome it.

Cholesterol is a type of fat your liver makes, and it’s also found in meat and dairy products. If you have too much LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, or “bad” cholesterol, in your blood, it can increase your risk of heart disease and strokes. As bad cholesterol travels around your body in your blood, it can stick to the sides of your arteries. Other substances can accumulate around this stuck cholesterol, like white blood cells and calcium, to form a tough substance called plaque. When plaque forms it hardens which narrows your arteries. This in turn reduces the flow of blood through them, which raises your blood pressure. If lumps of plaque break away from the sides of your arteries, they can form clots that can block the flow of blood to your heart or your brain. This can cause heart disease and strokes. Lifestyle changes and medications like Welchol can help you lower the levels of bad cholesterol in your blood, reducing your risk of heart problems and strokes.

Welchol active ingredients

The active ingredient in Welchol is called colesevelam hydrochloride. It helps your body to reduce both your bad cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Colesevelam hydrochloride helps to lower your bad cholesterol by making your liver produce more bile acids. Bile acids are produced by your liver and help you digest food. When you take Welchol, colesevelam hydrochloride attaches to bile acids and carries them to your bowels, where they’re excreted in your feces. This reduces your bile acid levels and causes your liver to make more. Your liver takes cholesterol from your blood to make bile acids, lowering your blood cholesterol levels.

It’s not yet understood how colesevelam hydrochloride also lowers your blood sugar levels. However scientific research has shown that it does do this, particularly when used alongside another diabetes medication called metformin.
