What is Ziana?

Ziana gel is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Bausch Health. It is a lincosamide topical antibiotic and retinoid combination product indicated to treat acne vulgaris in patients 12 years or older.

What doses of Ziana are available?

Ziana is available in a topical gel dosage form, in the following doses: Clindamycin phosphate 1.2% and tretinoin 0.025% gel.

Apply a pea-sized amount to the entire face at bedtime. Do not apply to eyes, mouth, angles of the nose, or mucous membranes. Ziana will make your skin more sensitive to the sun, which means you may get a sunburn more easily. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Wear sunscreen daily. Also, weather extremes such as wind or cold may cause skin irritation.

Ziana active ingredients

Ziana contains clindamycin and tretinoin as the active ingredients.

Ziana side effects

The most common possible side effects of Ziana in clinical trials include:

  • Skin irritation, skin redness, erythema, scaling, itching, burning, and stinging
  • Nasopharyngitis, pharyngolaryngeal pain, dry skin, cough, and sinusitis

In rare instances, Ziana can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Colitis – diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and colitis

Ziana drug interactions

Ziana can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Topical medications with a strong drying effect
  • Erythromycin-containing products
  • Hair perming solutions containing alcohol/lime/menthol
  • Medicated or abrasive soaps and cleansers
  • Products containing alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid, or sulfur/resorcinol/salicylic acid
  • Other drugs that may increase your sensitivity to sunlight – ciprofloxacin, tetracyclines
  • Thiazide water pills such as hydrochlorothiazide
  • Sulfa drugs such as sulfamethoxazole
  • Phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine
  • Benzoyl peroxide can be very irritating and may decrease the effectiveness of Ziana

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Ziana. Tell your health care providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Ziana contraindications

You should not use Ziana if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient clindamycin or tretinoin
  • Have had allergic reactions to any of the other ingredients in Ziana

Talk to your doctor before using Ziana if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Ziana
  • Have regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, colitis, caused by the use of antibiotics, C. difficile-associated diarrhea, Crohn’s disease
  • Have ever had severe diarrhea caused by antibiotics
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Ziana generic

Ziana is the trademark brand name for clindamycin/tretinoin manufactured by Bausch Health. A generic version of clindamycin/tretinoin is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand name drugs, but you can still find Ziana savings through NiceRx.
