What is Alinia?

Alina is a prescription medication used to treat diarrhea caused by the parasites Giardia lamblia or Cryptosporidium parvum. It can be given to patients one year and over as a liquid, or to patients 12 years and older as a tablet. Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum are microorganisms that infect your digestive system. They aren’t bacteria or viruses, they’re actually microscopic animals. When they infect you, they act as parasites. They live in your digestive system and feed on the food and drink you consume. They release substances as they do this that can make you ill, usually by giving you watery diarrhea. Without treatment, this can last from four to six weeks.

Alinia is the only FDA approved treatment for Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum infections. You take Alinia over the course of three days, either by swallowing an Alinia tablet or Alinia liquid (suspension solution). It kills the parasites, curing your infection and stopping your diarrhea.

Alinia active ingredients

The active ingredient in Alinia is called nitazoxanide. It kills the Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum parasites that can cause diarrhea. Nitazoxanide works by stopping an enzyme the parasites have in their bodies that helps them convert food into energy. This starves the parasites of energy, and quickly kills them.
