What is Mepron?

Mepron is a medication prescribed to prevent and treat a type of pneumonia caused by a fungal infection called Pneumocystis pneumonia. It’s given to adults and children over the age of 13 who can’t be given a medicine called co-trimoxazole.

Pneumonia is a disease that causes the small air sacs in your lungs to become inflamed. This can give you a dry cough, chest pain, fever, and can make it hard to breathe. Pneumonia is usually caused by an infection, and Pneumocystis pneumonia is caused by an infection of a fungus called Pneumocystis jirovecii. The fungus (a small, single-celled organism) infects your lungs, then reproduces and spreads, causing the inflammation and other symptoms of pneumonia.

Pneumocystis pneumonia develops most often in people who have a weakened immune system. This may happen in the case of AIDS/HIV, when undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, or when taking an immunosuppressant for another condition.

A medication called co-trimoxazole can be taken to treat Pneumocystis pneumonia. Co-trimoxazole isn’t suitable for everyone though. For example, if you’re allergic to it. In this case, Mepron can be taken instead. Mepron is an antiparasitic medication. It helps prevent and treat Pneumocystis pneumonia by killing the Pneumocystis jirovecii fungus that causes it. It’s usually sold in the form of a liquid oral suspension that’s taken alongside food.

Mepron active ingredients

The active ingredient in Mepron is called atovaquone. Atovaquone kills the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii that causes Pneumocystis pneumonia. It does so by disrupting processes inside fungal cells, particularly by stopping them from producing energy and absorbing metals from their surrounding environment. This stops the fungi from growing and reproducing, helping your body to clear the infection.
