How it works

  • Enroll online

Get started by filling out the online enrollment application to find out if you are eligible for assistance.

  • Pre-qualification

NiceRx verifies your eligibility for medication assistance and notifies you if you are pre-qualified. The pharmaceutical company provides your medication for free, and you only pay our service fee.

  • Submit documents

We will request documents to be submitted by you and your healthcare provider that are required by the pharmaceutical company to complete your enrollment.

  • Receive medication

Once approved, the pharmaceutical company typically ships a 90-day supply of medication to your home or healthcare provider’s address. Final acceptance is determined by the pharmaceutical company.

Our application process aims to make it as easy as possible to apply for the Ambisome patient assistance program. The first step is to complete our online enrollment application. What is Ambisome?

Ambisome contains the prescription medicine amphotericin B. Ambisome is classed as an antifungal and is used for the treatment of serious life-threatening infections such as leishmaniasis or certain types of meningitis in people who have HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

AmBisome is not for treating minor fungal infections such as yeast infections of the mouth, throat, or vagina.

Ambisome active ingredients

Amphotericin B works by attaching itself to the surface of the fungal cells. The fungal cells then leak sodium, potassium, hydrogen, and chlorine ions, causing the cell to die. Ambisome has been seen to be effective against fungi that infect both within and outside your normal healthy cells.

Ambisome may need to be given for several weeks or months depending on the infection you are being treated for. It is given as an infusion directly into your vein. This can take up to 2 hours as it must be given slowly. Your blood pressure, kidney function, oxygen levels, and breathing will be monitored closely while you are being treated with Ambisome.

Ambisome side effects

The most common side effects caused by Ambisome include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Feeling weak
  • Rash

In rare instances, Ambisome can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Swelling in your feet or ankles
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Decreased urination
  • Short of breath, tiredness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Feeling numb or tingly around mouth, fingers, or toes
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Irregular heartbeats

Your doctor will assess the benefits of using Ambisome against your risk of side effects.

Ambisome can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Treatments for heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) – amiodarone, dronedarone
  • Antiviral treatments – cidofovir, tenofovir
  • Treatments to prevent organ transplant rejection – everolimus, sirolimus, tacrolimus
