What is Ambisome?
Ambisome contains the prescription medicine amphotericin B. Ambisome is classed as an antifungal and is used for the treatment of serious life-threatening infections such as leishmaniasis or certain types of meningitis in people who have HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).
AmBisome is not for treating minor fungal infections such as yeast infections of the mouth, throat, or vagina.
Ambisome active ingredients
Amphotericin B works by attaching itself to the surface of the fungal cells. The fungal cells then leak sodium, potassium, hydrogen, and chlorine ions, causing the cell to die. Ambisome has been seen to be effective against fungi that infect both within and outside your normal healthy cells.
Ambisome may need to be given for several weeks or months depending on the infection you are being treated for. It is given as an infusion directly into your vein. This can take up to 2 hours as it must be given slowly. Your blood pressure, kidney function, oxygen levels, and breathing will be monitored closely whilst you are being treated with Ambisome.
