If you meet the Amitiza assistance program eligibility criteria, you could receive your medicine without paying the full retail price. We review each application individually, although the main factors considered by most patient assistance programs are:

How do I apply for the Amitiza patient assistance program?

We make it simple and easy to apply for the Amitiza patient assistance program. Just fill in our enrollment application, and tell us about any medications you’re taking, including Amitiza. What is Amitiza?

Amitiza is a medication that is used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (constipation without a known cause) in adults. The medication is also prescribed to women aged over 18 to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. Amitiza is taken orally as a capsule. The medication helps with constipation by increasing the amount of fluid you secrete into your bowels. This makes your stools softer and makes it easier to pass them. It will also ease other symptoms like abdominal pain.

Constipation is when someone has difficulty passing a stool, often because the stool is dry and hard. It can be painful, and it can cause bloating. In some cases, it can even lead to hemorrhoids, anal fissure, and fecal impaction. Constipation is classified as chronic when it persists for several weeks or longer. An irritable bowel syndrome is a group of conditions that can cause abdominal pain and bowel problems, including constipation.

Amitiza active ingredients

The active ingredient in Amitiza is called lubiprostone. Once swallowed, lubiprostone travels through your digestive system to your bowels. As it breaks down and is absorbed into your intestines, it activates a specific type of channel in your cells. This channel causes fluid to be secreted into your bowels, softening your stool.

Amitiza side effects & Amitiza drug interactions

As with all medications, Amitiza can cause side effects. Some people will get them and others not at all. Those that do, may not experience the same ones. Side effects tend to be rare and mild with Amitiza. The most common of the Amitiza side effects are nausea and diarrhea. Other common side effects include headaches, bloating, abdominal pain, and flatulence. Less common side effects (affecting less than 1% of patients) include dizziness, fatigue, constipation, weight gain, depression, and anxiety.

This isn’t a full list of all the side effects that Amitiza can cause. For more details see the patient leaflet that comes with your medication. Talk to your physician or a pharmacist if you have any concerns about any Amitiza side effects.

Amitiza and other medications can interact. This can change how Amitiza and the other medications work and can make side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements.

Amitiza warnings & precautions
