What is Apriso?
Apriso is a medication prescribed to adults to manage and lessen the symptoms of a bowel disease called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. It causes the lining of your bowels (your colon and your large intestine) to become inflamed. This can affect how your bowels work and can cause damage.
This inflammation and damage in your bowels can cause symptoms like abdominal (stomach) pain, feeling sick, diarrhea, fever, weight loss, and anemia. These can affect your quality of life, particularly if the symptoms become severe. Over time, ulcerative colitis can lead to inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), and even colon cancer.
There’s no permanent cure for ulcerative colitis, but you can manage it with medication. Apriso comes in capsules that you swallow, usually daily in the morning. It helps to reduce inflammation in your bowel, reducing the severity of your symptoms and helping to limit your flare-ups.
Apriso active ingredients
The active ingredient in Apriso is called mesalazine. It helps to reduce inflammation in your bowels. Inflammation is a natural response to disease and injury triggered by your immune system. It’s usually helpful, as it assists your body to clear diseases and repair injuries. However, sometimes this can occur in healthy areas of your body where it isn’t needed. When this happens for long sustained periods, it can cause harm and lead to diseases, like ulcerative colitis.
When you take Apriso, the medication travels through your digestive system, and the active ingredient mesalazine is absorbed into your bowels. Molecules of mesalazine attach themselves to enzymes in your bowels, called cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, stopping them from working. These enzymes usually produce a natural chemical (prostaglandin), that triggers inflammation. By stopping the enzymes working, less prostaglandin is produced, and less inflammation is triggered.
