What is Pentasa?

Pentasa is a medication prescribed to treat ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in bowels. Specifically, it causes the lining of your colon and rectum (your large intestine) to become inflamed. The lining can develop small breaks that may bleed (ulcers). The condition can give you abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, cause weight loss, and anemia. Over time it can cause colon damage, inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), and even colon cancer.

Ulcerative colitis is a long-term condition that may be mild to severe. It can ease off for a time, but you may get flare-ups of stronger symptoms. What causes ulcerative colitis isn’t known for sure, but it’s thought to be a mix of genetics, immune system problems, changes in gut bacteria, and factors in your environment. 

Pentasa helps with ulcerative colitis as it reduces inflammation and pain in your bowel. It’s usually taken as a tablet that is swallowed, then it releases its active ingredient slowly when it’s in your digestive system. The medication can reduce the severity of symptoms and help prevent flare-ups.

Pentasa active ingredients

The active ingredient in Pentasa is mesalazine. Mesalazine works when it’s released into your bowel, rather than having an effect on your whole body. It has an anti-inflammatory medication.

Your immune system causes inflammation through a complex process that involves a number of steps and substances. Mesalazine disrupts part of this process. It stops a substance involved in inflammation from working, called prostaglandin. This reduces inflammation and any pain caused by ulcerative colitis, easing symptoms, and preventing flare-ups.

Pentasa side effects & Pentasa drug interactions

The most common side effects caused by Pentasa include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Rashes
• Flatulence

In rare instances, Pentasa can cause more serious side effects, including:

• Severe allergic reactions
• Liver and kidney disorders
• Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
• Inflammation of parts of the heart (myocarditis and pericarditis)

• Mercaptopurine (6-mercaptopurine), used for cancer and autoimmune diseases
• Thioguanine, used to treat leukemia
• Anticoagulants, like warfarin

Pentasa warnings & precautions

Don’t take Pentasa if you:

• Are allergic to the active ingredient mesalazine
• Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Pentasa 
• Are allergic to any other salicylates, like aspirin
• Have severe liver or kidney problems

Talk to your physician before taking Pentasa if you:

• Are taking any of the medications listed in the section above that can interact with Pentasa
• Have, or have had, any kidney or liver problems
• Are allergic to sulfasalazine
• Have a medical condition that can make you prone to bleeding
• Have a stomach ulcer or duodenal ulcer
• Have lung problems, particularly asthma
