What is Atorvastatin Calcium?

Atorvastatin Calcium is a prescription drug belonging to a class of medications commonly called “statins” (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) that treat high cholesterol in adults and children over the age of 10.  It is used together with diet, weight loss, and exercise to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Atorvastatin Calcium is used to lower levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and triglycerides (fats) in the blood. It also is used to increase the “good” cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) in the blood. It works by reducing the production of cholesterol in the body while also decreasing the amount of fat (triglycerides) in your blood. This helps prevent the build-up of cholesterol and fats on the walls of the arteries, which could block blood flow to your vital organs such as your heart and brain. By reducing the amount of cholesterol and fats (triglycerides) in your blood, you will lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and help prevent angina (chest pain), heart attacks, and strokes.
