What is Atrovent HFA?
Atrovent HFA is a prescription medication used to manage bronchospasms (narrowing of the airways) in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). If you have COPD, your doctor may have prescribed Atrovent HFA to help manage your condition. It is a maintenance treatment that relaxes the muscle tissue in your airways to help stop them narrowing (bronchospasm), making it easier for you to breathe.
You take Atrovent HFA by inhaling it into your airways using an inhaler. You typically take Atrovent HFA four times a day, but the doctor who prescribes it to you will decide how much you should take and how often based on your condition and medical history.
Atrovent HFA active ingredients
The active ingredient in Atrovent HFA is called ipratropium bromide, usually just called ipratropium. It’s an anticholinergic drug that helps to relax and open-up your airways.
When you inhale Atrovent HFA, the ipratropium it contains attaches to the surface of the muscle tissue in your airways at sites called muscarinic receptors. When these receptors are stimulated, they can cause the muscle tissue to contract, narrowing your airways. But when ipratropium attaches to the muscarinic receptors it blocks them, stopping them from being stimulated. This relaxes the muscle tissue, opening up your airways. On average, it takes between 15 and 30 minutes for ipratropium to start working and its effects can last from three to five hours.
Atrovent HFA side effects
The most common side effects caused by Atrovent HFA include:
- Worsened COPD symptoms
- Dyspnea – shortness of breath
- Bronchitis – inflammation of the airways in your lungs that can cause coughing, producing sputum, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest pain
In rare instances, Atrovent HFA can cause more serious side effects, like:
- Severe allergic reactions to the medication that can cause rashes, itching, swelling in your face, tongue, and throat, and difficulties breathing
- Paradoxical bronchospasm – a sudden narrowing and blockage of your airways that can cause difficulties breathing
- New or worsened acute narrow-angle glaucoma – an eye condition caused by a build-up of pressure inside your eye
- New or worsened urinary retention – difficulties passing urine or pain when passing urine
Your doctor will assess the benefits of taking Atrovent HFA against your risk of side effects.
Atrovent HFA drug interactions
Atrovent HFA can interact with other medications. Tell your prescribing doctor about all drugs you’re taking, particularly:
- Any other anticholinergic medicines or medicines that contain an anticholinergic agent
- Any other medications for COPD
Atrovent HFA warning and precautions
Atrovent HFA is for everyday use to manage your COPD symptoms and to keep your airways relaxed and open. It shouldn’t be used to relieve sudden and severe symptoms, like a COPD exacerbation. You should use a rescue inhaler in this situation, or whatever medication your doctor has prescribed for sudden and severe symptoms.
Atrovent HFA isn’t suitable for everyone. Don’t take Atrovent HFA if you:
- Are allergic to the active ingredient ipratropium bromide
- Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Atrovent HFA
- Are allergic to atropine
- Are under 18 years of age
Talk to your doctor before taking Atrovent HFA if you:
- Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Atrovent HFA
- Have any kidney problems
- Have any eye problems, particularly glaucoma
- Have any conditions that make it difficult to pass urine, like an enlarged prostate
- Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
- Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
