What is Besivance?
Besivance is an antibiotic used to treat conjunctivitis. It comes as a liquid suspension that’s administered directly to your eyes using a dropper bottle.
Conjunctivitis is a bacterial eye infection. The condition causes the top layer of the white part of your eye, and your inner eyelid, to become inflamed. It can affect one eye, or both. Also known as ‘pink eye’ it can make your eye turn pink or red. If you have conjunctivitis, you’ll likely experience itching, burning sensations, and pain. You might find that your eyes and your eyelids swell. It can also cause a discharge which can stick your eyelids shut as you sleep, making it difficult to open them in the morning.
Conjunctivitis can be caused by allergies, reactions to certain chemicals, and viral infections, but is often caused by bacterial infections in the eye. Besivance can treat bacterial conjunctivitis as it kills many of the bacterial strains that commonly cause the infection.
Besivance active ingredients
The active ingredient in Besivance is called besifloxacin. Besifloxacin is a class of drug called a quinolone antibiotic. It’s a broad-spectrum antibiotic that can kill strains of bacteria belonging to a range of families that often cause conjunctivitis. It works by stopping the bacteria replicating and spreading themselves by interrupting the process by which the bacteria copy their DNA.
Besivance side effects & Besivance drug interactions
Besivance side effects are mild and relatively rare, experienced by just 1-2% of people who take it. They include an increase in redness, blurred vision, eye irritation and pain, eye pruritus (itchiness), and headaches.
If you take medications together, they can interact with each other. When this occurs, it can affect how they work, with certain side effects becoming more likely. No medications are known to interact with Besivance, but you should tell your prescribing doctor about all drugs you’re taking anyway. This includes any vitamins or dietary supplements.
Besivance warnings & precautions
Don’t take Besivance if you:
- Are allergic to the active ingredient besifloxacin or to other quinolone antibiotics
