Zirgan prices without insurance will vary depending on how much you buy. Prices will also vary by retailer. As a guide, Zirgan ophthalmic gel 0.15% typically costs $420 for 5 grams.
What is Zirgan?
Zirgan contains the prescription medicine ganciclovir, which is an antiviral eye gel used to treat eye infections (acute herpetic keratitis) caused by the herpes simplex virus. Zirgan also slows the growth and spread of cytomegalovirus (CMV). Zirgan is not however a cure for herpes or CMV.
Zirgan should be applied 5 times a day until your infection heals, then it is applied 3 times a day for 7 days. Zirgan gel should be used as directed by your prescriber. You should wash your hands before using the eye gel and follow the instruction leaflet on how to apply the eye gel safely.
Zirgan will not cure herpes or CMV and your disease may continue to progress even after you have been treated with this medication. You may need regular checks to see how your treatment is progressing.
Zirgan active ingredients
Zirgan ophthalmic gel 0.15% contains the active ingredient ganciclovir, which is obtained from guanosine. The phosphorylated form stops the replication of herpes simplex virus DNA. Ganciclovir is changed in the body by certain viral and cellular enzymes to ganciclovir triphosphate. This is an antiviral and stops the production of the viral DNA in 2 ways. One is to block the action of DNA polymerase, an enzyme that is responsible for the replication of viral DNA, and also by being directly added into the viral DNA strand itself. This causes the production of the DNA to stop and the virus to stop replicating.
