What is Bethkis?

Bethkis (tobramycin inhalation solution) is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Chiesi USA, Inc. Bethkis is an aminoglycoside antibiotic inhaled into the lungs using a nebulizer. It is used for the management of cystic fibrosis patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

It is not recommended for use in patients under 6 years of age, those with a forced expiratory volume in less than one second (FEV1) below 40% or above 80% of that predicted, or patients with Burkholderia cepacia.

What doses of Bethkis are available?

Bethkis is available as a solution for oral inhalation in a single-use ampule containing 300 mg tobramycin.

Administer the contents of one ampule twice daily by oral inhalation in cycles of 28-days on the drug, followed by 28 days off the drug.

Bethkis side effects

The most common side effects of Bethkis in clinical trials include:

  • Decreased forced expiratory volume
  • Increased red blood cell sedimentation rate
  • Dysphonia

In rare instances, Bethkis can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Ringing or roaring sounds in the ears
  • Hearing loss, dizziness
  • Signs of kidney problems such as change in the amount of urine, chest tightness, or wheezing
  • Muscle weakness
  • Bronchospasm
  • Fetal harm

Bethkis drug interactions

Bethkis can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Other drugs with neurotoxic or ototoxic potential
  • Ethacrynic acid, furosemide, urea, or mannitol

Bethkis contraindications

You should not use Bethkis if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient tobramycin

  • Have a known hypersensitivity to any aminoglycoside
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – Bethkis may harm an unborn baby

Talk to your doctor before using Bethkis if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Bethkis
  • Have hearing problems
  • Have any breathing problems
  • Have myasthenia gravis or Parkinson’s disease
  • Have kidney disease
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
