What is Kitabis Pak?

Kitabis Pak (co-packaging of tobramycin inhalation solution and a PARI LC PLUS Reusable Nebulizer) is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Pari Respiratory Equipment, Inc. Kitabis Pak contains tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic used for the management of cystic fibrosis in adults and children 6 years of age and older with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa.)

Kitabis Pak is not recommended for use in patients under the age of 6 years, those with FEV1 less than 25% or greater than 75% of predicted, or patients with Burkholderia cepacia.

What doses of Kitabis Pak are available?

Kitabis Pak is available in inhalation solution form, in the following doses: 300 mg in a single-use 5 mL ampule.

Administer tobramycin inhalation solution as one single–use ampule twice a day in cycles of 28 days on the drug, followed by 28 days off the drug. Administer each dose using the PARI LC PLUS Reusable Nebulizer and DeVilbiss Pulmo-Aide compressor.

Kitabis Pak side effects

The most common side effects of Kitabis Pak in clinical trials include:

  • Cough
  • Pharyngitis
  • Increased sputum

In rare instances, Kitabis Pak can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Bronchospasm
  • Ototoxicity – tinnitus and hearing loss
  • Nephrotoxicity
  • Neuromuscular disorder – muscle weakness

Kitabis Pak drug interactions

Kitabis Pak can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Other drugs with neurotoxic, nephrotoxic or ototoxic potential
  • Ethacrynic acid, furosemide, urea, or intravenous mannitol

Kitabis Pak contraindications

You should not use Kitabis Pak if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient tobramycin
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Kitabis Pak
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor about your medical condition before using Kitabis Pak if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Kitabis Pak
  • Have any hearing problems
  • Have any breathing problems such as cough, wheezing, or chest tightness
  • Have myasthenia gravis or Parkinson’s disease
  • Have kidney disease
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
