What is Brexafemme?

Brexafemme (ibrexafungerp tablets) is a prescription medication manufactured by Scynexis, Inc. It is a triterpenoid antifungal non-azole with FDA approval (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) for the treatment of adult and post-menarchal pediatric females with vulvovaginal candidiasis, VVC (vaginal yeast infections).

Brexafemme has a fungicidal mechanism of action that kills a wide range of Candida species, including strains resistant to azole antifungal medications such as fluconazole and itraconazole.

What doses of Brexafemme are available?

Brexafemme is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 150 mg.

Brexafemme side effects

The most common side effects of Brexafemme in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea, and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness

In rare instances, Brexafemme can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Risk of fetal toxicity – females of reproductive potential are advised to use effective contraception during treatment

Brexafemme drug interactions

You should not use Brexafemme if you:

  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – use effective birth control while taking Brexafemme and for 4 days after your last dose

Talk to your doctor before using Brexafemme if you:

  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
