What is Cubicin?

Cubicin contains the prescription medicine daptomycin, an antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections of the skin and in the body. Cubicin is used for:

  • Adults and children aged at least 1 year old with complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI)
  • Adult patients with Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections, including adult patients who have right-sided infective endocarditis, caused by methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strains of the bacteria
  • Children aged from 1 to 17 years of age with Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections

Cubicin is given as an infusion directly into a vein. Cubicin is given slowly, the IV infusion can take up to 60 minutes depending on your age. Cubicin is mixed with a liquid before use, this should be done only when you are going to use it. The bottle should be gently swirled and not shaken as this will spoil the medicine. The course of treatment should be completed even if you see an improvement in your symptoms. Improper use can lead to bacterial resistance to the medication. It is important to note that daptomycin will not treat a viral infection.

Cubicin active ingredients

Daptomycin is an antibacterial belonging to a class called cyclic lipopeptides. Daptomycin is used for the treatment of infections caused by aerobic (needing oxygen) pathogenic bacteria. Daptomycin attaches itself to the cell membranes of the bacteria causing the cell membrane to become depolarized (to become less negatively charged). This change in the cell membrane of the bacteria causes a decrease in the production of DNA, RNA, and protein, leading to the eventual death of the bacterial cell.
