What is Delzicol?

Delzicol is a medication used to treat an inflammatory bowel condition called ulcerative colitis. Delzicol is prescribed to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. It helps by reducing inflammation in the colon and rectum, providing relief from the symptoms of the disease. The medication can also be taken proactively to stop the disease recurring.

Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in your colon and your rectum (both part of your large intestine). The most common symptoms of the disease include abdominal pain and diarrhea with blood in it. You may also experience abdominal pain, fever, weight loss, and anemia. It is a long-term condition that can last for many years, and it can lessen and worsen over time. The causes of the disease aren’t known for certain, but evidence suggests it’s a mixture of genetics, immune system problems, changes in gut bacteria, and a range of other lifestyle factors.

Delzicol active ingredients

The active ingredient in Delzicol is called mesalamine. Mesalamine is absorbed into the walls of the large intestine where it reduces inflammation. The exact way in which it does this isn’t known for sure, but it’s likely that it works by blocking an enzyme that produces a molecule called prostaglandin in your intestines. This reduction in prostaglandin appears to reduce inflammation.

Delzicol side effects & Delzicol drug interactions

As with other medications, Delzicol can cause side effects in some people. Not everyone will experience side effects though or have the same ones if they do. The most common Delzicol side effects experienced by adults include constipation, stomachaches, dizziness, a runny nose, back pain, rashes, and flu-like symptoms. In rare cases Delzicol can cause more serious side effects, like kidney problems, liver failure, and allergic reactions.

These aren’t all the side effects that Delzicol can cause. For more details see the patient leaflet that comes with your Delzicol. If you have any concerns about side effects, talk to your physician or a pharmacist.

Delzicol can interact with other medications. This can alter how it and the other medications work which can make some side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements. In particular, tell them if you’re taking:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen or naproxen
  • Azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine
