What is Dificid?

Dificid is a prescription antibiotic given to adults and children aged six months and over to treat diarrhea caused by a Clostridioides difficile infection. Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) is a common type of bacteria that can infect your digestive system. The bacteria live in your colon (your large intestine) where they release toxins that can trigger inflammation in your colon and cause diarrhea. Other symptoms can include nausea (feeling sick), stomach pain, a loss of appetite, dehydration, and fever.

If you have a C. diff infection that is causing diarrhea, your doctor may have prescribed Dificid to you. It’s an antibiotic that stops the C. diff bacteria from multiplying and spreading, helping your immune system to overcome the infection. You take Dificid as a tablet or an oral suspension (liquid) you swallow. Your doctor will tell you what dose and how often to take your Dificid when they prescribe it to you.

Dificid active ingredients

The active ingredient in Dificid is called fidaxomicin. It’s a narrow-spectrum antibiotic that targets C. diff bacteria. When you take Dificid, the fidaxomicin it contains is released into your colon and absorbed by the C. diff bacteria. Fidaxomicin then blocks an enzyme called polymerase that the bacteria use to copy their genetic material. This makes it harder for the bacteria to multiply and spread, making it easier for your immune system to clear the infection.

Because fidaxomicin is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic that only affects a small number of bacteria species, it doesn’t affect the majority of healthy bacteria in your colon. This minimizes the side effects Dificid causes.

Dificid side effects & Dificid drug interactions

If you take Dificid, you may experience side effects, with the most common including:

  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Vomiting (being sick)
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Bleeding in your stomach or intestines
  • Skin rashes
  • A low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • A low white blood cell count (neutropenia)

In rare instances, Dificid can cause more serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions to the medication that can cause skin rashes, hives, a tightening of your chest, and swelling of your face, mouth, and throat that can make it difficult to breathe.

Dificid can interact with other medications, which can change how it and the other medications work and can make some side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing doctor about all drugs you’re taking, particularly any other antibiotics, or any other medications to treat a bowel condition or that affect your bowels.
