What is Epipen JR?

Epipen JR is a pre-filled auto-injector containing epinephrine, used for the treatment of life-threatening emergencies such as anaphylaxis in people who are at risk of or have a history of serious life-threatening allergic emergencies. Allergic reactions can be caused by insect bites or stings, foods, drugs, and any other allergens. Epinephrine can also be used to treat exercise-induced anaphylaxis.

EpiPen JR may be used for self-injection by a person with a history of severe allergic reactions.

Epipen JR active ingredients

Epinephrine is a hormone produced naturally in your body by your adrenal glands as well as the medulla oblongata. It is classed as an alpha and a beta-receptor agonist or more simply as a stimulant.

Epinephrine helps to narrow your blood vessels and open the airways in your lungs. This effect reverses severe low blood pressure, wheezing, severe skin itching, and other symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Epipen JR side effects

The most common side effect caused by Epipen JR include:

• Difficulty sleeping

Some side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Epipen JR can cause more serious side effects. These include:

• Headache, nausea, vomiting
• Blurred vision, dizziness, sweating, fast heart rate, pounding in the ears
• Seizures
• Difficulty speaking, confusion, tremors
• Pain in the chest, arms, back, jaw, or neck
• Nervousness

Epipen JR drug interactions

Epipen JR can interact with other medications. This can change how Epipen JR and the other medications work and can make some side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing doctor about all drugs you are taking, particularly:

• Digoxin
• Levothyroxine
• Antidepressants – amitriptyline, doxepin, imipramine, nortriptyline, trimipramine
• Beta-blockers – carvedilol, labetalol, nadolol, propranolol, sotalol, timolol
• Ergot medicine – ergotamine, dihydroergotamine
• MAO inhibitors – phenelzine, rasagiline, tranylcypromine
• Diabetic medication – empagliflozin, glipizide, insulin, metformin

Epipen JR warnings and precautions

Epipen JR is not suitable for everyone. Do not use Epipen JR if you:

• Are allergic to the active ingredients epinephrine
• Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Epipen JR (you can find these listed in the leaflet which comes with the medication)

Talk to your doctor before using Epipen JR if you:

• Have heart disease or high blood pressure
• Have asthma
• Have depression or a mental illness
• Have a thyroid disorder
• Have asthma
• Have diabetes

Having an allergic reaction while pregnant or breastfeeding could harm both the mother and baby. If you need to use an EpiPen JR during pregnancy or while you are breast-feeding seek medical attention immediately. Make sure your doctor caring for you during pregnancy or when you are breastfeeding knows you have used an Epipen JR.

Seek emergency medical attention even after you have used EpiPen JR. The effects may wear off after 10 or 20 minutes. You will need to be monitored and receive further medical treatment.

The EpiPen JR Auto-Injector (0.15 mg) is for patients who weigh about 33 to 66 pounds (15 to 30 kilograms).

It is not known if EpiPen or EpiPen Jr is safe and effective in children who weigh less than 33 pounds (15 kilograms).
