What is Lyumjev Kwikpen?

Lyumjev Kwikpen is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company. It is a rapid-acting human insulin analog used to help improve blood glucose control in adults with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

What doses of Lyumjev Kwikpen are available?

Lyumjev Kwikpen is available in injection form (100 units/mL), as 3 mL KwikPens, 3 mL Junior KwikPens, 3 mL Tempo Pens, 3 mL cartridges, and 10 mL vials, and in injection form (200 units/mL) as 3 mL KwikPens. Do not share a prefilled pen, cartridge, or syringe between patients, even if a new needle is attached.

Lyumjev may be administered by:

  • Subcutaneous injection – Use Lyumjev U-100 or U-200 subcutaneously at the start of a meal or within 20 minutes of starting a meal. Inject into the abdomen, upper arm, thigh, or buttocks. Do not use the same injection sites within the same region to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy and localized cutaneous amyloidosis.
  • Continuous subcutaneous infusion (Insulin pump) of Lyumjev U-100 Use according to the insulin pump instructions. Do not use Lyumjev U-200 as a continuous subcutaneous infusion
  • Intravenous infusion of Lyumjev U-100 only, under medical supervision. Do not use Lyumjev U-200 as an intravenous infusion.

Store Lyumjev vials, pens, and cartridges in the refrigerator. You may store the medicine at room temperature for 28 days. Do not use the insulin if it has been frozen. Throw away any unused medicine after 28 days.

Lyumjev Kwikpen side effects

The most common side effects of Lyumjev Kwikpen in clinical trials include:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Injection site reactions
  • Lipodystrophy
  • Cutaneous amyloidosis

Lyumjev Kwikpen can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Antidiabetic agents
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin II receptor blocking agents
  • Somatostatin analogs – octreotide
  • Sulfonamide antibiotics
  • Estrogens
  • Glucagon
  • Thyroid hormones
  • Beta-blockers

Lyumjev Kwikpen contraindications

You should not use Lyumjev Kwikpen if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient insulin lispro-aabc
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Lyumjev Kwikpen
  • Are having episodes of hypoglycemia
