How much is Humalog without insurance?

Humalog prices without insurance will vary depending on where you buy it and the number of doses per pack. You can expect to pay anywhere between around $320 and $465 for a pack of five injectable pens. A pack of 15 injectable pens can cost around $950 and $1,400. With NiceRx you’ll always pay a flat monthly fee of $49.

What is Humalog?

Humalog is a type of insulin used to treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Humalog is a fast-acting insulin. You inject it under your skin or use it with an insulin pump just after you’ve eaten, to lower your blood sugar.

If you have diabetes, your body struggles to manage your blood sugar levels. Usually this happens because your pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. This can result in your blood sugar being too high, especially after you’ve eaten. Over time this can cause a range of problems, like heart disease and nerve damage.

Humalog active ingredients

The active ingredient in Humalog is a type of insulin called insulin lispro. It’s similar to normal human insulin, and works in the same way, but has been modified to be faster acting. When you inject or pump Humalog into your body, it enters your blood supply. It then increases the rate at which your liver, and your fat and muscle cells, absorb sugar from your blood.

Humalog side effects & drug interactions

Humalog can have side effects. You might not experience them, and they vary between people. Humalog’s side effects are usually relatively mild. The most common Humalog side effects, which affect around 1 in 100 people, are caused by a mild local allergic reaction. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and itching around the area where the Humalog was injected.

Rarer side effects can include a thickening or pitting of the skin (lipodystrophy), and fluid retention and swelling in the arms and ankles. Broad allergic reactions are rare but can happen. Stop using Humalog and seek urgent medical attention if you experience allergy symptoms like difficulties breathing, falling blood pressure, a rapid heartbeat, or a rash over your whole body.

Medications can interact with each other, changing how they work and increasing the risk of side effects. The following can interact with Humalog:

  • Estrogen containing drugs including birth control and hormone replacements
  • Steroids
  • Thyroid hormone replacement therapy
  • Oral hypoglycemics
  • Acetyl salicylic acid
  • Sulfa antibiotics
  • Octreotide
  • Beta 2-stimulants
  • Beta-blockers
  • Antidepressants (monoamine oxidase inhibitors or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
  • Danazol
  • Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers

Make sure you tell your prescribing physician about all medications you’re taking, including any supplements.

Humalog warnings & precautions

Don’t use Humalog if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient insulin lispro
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients found in Humalog (listed in the leaflet which comes with the medication)
  • Think hypoglycemia is starting (a fall in blood sugar to low levels)

Talk to your physician before taking Humalog if you:

  • Often have hypoglycemia or have problems recognizing it’s happening
  • Have problems with your kidneys or liver
  • Have recently become ill
  • Are exercising more than usual
  • Are planning to travel or go on vacation (time differences can change when you eat and when you take your Humalog)
  • Have heart failure or other heart problems
  • Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed

The amount of Humalog you need can change throughout pregnancy and if you’re breastfeeding. Ask your physician for advice on using Humalog when pregnant or breastfeeding.
