What is Nexletol?

Nexletol is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Esperion Therapeutics Inc. It is used with diet and maximally tolerated statin therapy to treat adults with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia ((HeFH) an inherited condition that causes high cholesterol levels or established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) who require additional lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C/LDL cholesterol).

It may be used with ezetimibe (Zetia), a cholesterol-lowering drug that lowers how much cholesterol your intestines absorb after a meal. It is not known if Nexletol reduces problems from high cholesterol, such as heart attacks, stroke, death, or other heart diseases.

What doses of Nexletol are available?

Nexletol is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 180 mg.

Take180 mg orally once daily with or without food. Please read the prescribing information and always speak with a healthcare professional for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Nexletol active ingredients

Nexletol contains bempedoic acid, an adenosine triphosphate-citrate lyase (ACL) inhibitor as the active ingredient.

Nexletol side effects

The most common side effects of Nexletol in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Bronchitis
  • Muscle spasms
  • Back pain
  • Pain in extremity
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Anemia
  • Elevated liver enzymes

In rare instances, Nexletol can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Hyperuricemia – assess uric acid levels periodically
  • Tendon rupture – the risk of tendon problems increases if you are over 60 years of age, are taking antibiotics (fluoroquinolones), are taking corticosteroids, or have renal failure

Nexletol drug interactions

Nexletol can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Simvastatin
  • Pravastatin

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Nexletol. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Nexletol contraindications

You should not use Nexletol if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient bempedoic acid
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Nexletol
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor before using Nexletol if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Nexletol
  • Have a history of gout
  • Have or have had tendon problems
  • Have severe kidney problems or severe liver problems
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – may cause fetal harm
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Nexletol generic

Nexletol is the trademark brand name for bempedoic acid manufactured by Esperion Therapeutics Inc. A generic version of bempedoic acid is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Nexletol savings through NiceRx.
