What is ProAir HFA?

ProAir HFA is a medication prescribed to adults and children aged four and over to:

  • Treat and prevent bronchospasms in people with reversible obstructive airway disease, like asthma
  • Prevent exercise-induced bronchospasms

Bronchospasms are a sudden tightening of the muscles in your airways and lungs. They reduce how much air you can take into your lungs and can make it harder for you to breathe. Asthma is an obstructive lung disease caused by having over-sensitive airways. Inflammation can be triggered easily in the airways, and it can cause the muscles in the airways to tighten. Bronchospasms caused by asthma is often called asthma attacks. Bronchospasms can also be brought on by exercise (exercise-induced bronchospasm), particularly in people with obstructive airway conditions.

ProAir HFA can help treat a bronchospasm if you’re having one and can be taken to prevent them, including before exercise. You inhale ProAir HFA directly into your airways using a ProAir HFA inhaler. It relaxes the muscle tissue in your airways and lungs, opening them up and providing relief from a bronchospasm or making it less likely to happen.

ProAir HFA active ingredients

The active ingredient in ProAir HFA is a beta-blocker called albuterol sulfate. It relaxes the muscles in your airways and lungs that tighten to cause bronchospasms. When you inhale ProAir HFA, molecules of albuterol sulfate attach to the muscle tissue in your lungs and airways. They bind with areas on the surface of the muscle called beta receptors. This causes the receptors to start a chemical process in your muscle tissue that makes it relax. This helps to open up your lungs and airways.
