What is Veltassa?

Veltassa is an FDA-approved medication manufactured by Vifor Pharma. Veltassa is a potassium binder used for the treatment of hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium in the blood) in adults. Hyperkalemia occurs in patients with acute or chronic kidney disease (CKD) or heart failure, especially in those who are taking drugs that inhibit the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Veltassa is not absorbed into your bloodstream and acts directly on the intestines. Veltassa works by binding itself to potassium in your digestive tract. This helps to stop your body from absorbing excess potassium. This drug does have a limitation of use and is not to be used as an emergency treatment for hyperkalemia because of its delayed onset of action.

Veltassa dry form powder needs to be mixed with water before you take it. It is normally taken once daily with or without food. It should not be taken with hot liquid or hot food. The unmixed oral powder should be stored in the refrigerator, but you may store Veltassa at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. The powder must be used within 3 months of being taken out of the refrigerator.  A healthcare professional will decide how often you take Veltassa depending on the desired target range for you.

What doses of Veltassa are available?

Veltassa is available as a powder for oral suspension in doses of 8.4g.

Always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Veltassa active ingredients

Veltassa is a polymer containing calcium-sorbitol, which exchanges calcium for the excess potassium in the intestinal tract. Veltassa’s mechanism of action is to increase the excretion of potassium in stools from the body by binding with the potassium in the gastrointestinal tract. This mopping up of the excess potassium helps to reduce the amount of potassium that is free in the gastrointestinal tract and therefore helps to lower body serum potassium levels.
