What is Adakveo?
Adakveo (crizanlizumab-tmca) is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Adakveo is a biologic drug that’s available only as a brand-name medication and does not come in a biosimilar form.
Adakveo is a selectin blocker indicated to reduce the frequency of vasoocclusive crises (also known as VOCs or pain crises) in adults and pediatric patients 16 years of age and older with sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder in which red blood cells are abnormally shaped, restricting their flow in blood vessels and limiting oxygen delivery to the body’s tissues, leading to severe pain and organ damage.
What doses of Adakveo are available?
Adakveo is available in injection form, in the following doses: 100 mg/10 mL (10 mg/mL) solution in a single-dose vial.

Adakveo side effects
The most common side effects of Adakveo in clinical trials compared to placebo include:
- Arthralgia (joint pain)
- Back pain
In rare instances, Adakveo can cause more serious side effects. These can include:
- Infusion-Related Reactions – symptoms include pain in various locations, headache, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, dizziness, pruritus, urticaria, sweating, or shortness of breath or wheezing
- Interference with automated platelet counts (platelet clumping), run test as soon as possible, or use citrate tubes

Adakveo drug interactions
