What is Alendronate?

Alendronate is a prescription drug that is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis (bone loss) in postmenopausal women. It is also used to treat Paget’s disease of the bone as well as osteoporosis in men and women who are taking corticosteroids. It is now being studied in the treatment of hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood) and bone pain caused by cancer.

Alendronate belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates. It helps prevent bone loss and increases bone density, which can ultimately reduce the risk of fractures.

This medication is taken by mouth on an empty stomach after getting up for the day and before taking your first food, beverage, or other medication. The tablet should be taken whole with a full glass (6-8 ounces) of plain water. You should stay fully upright for at least 30 minutes and not lie down until after your first food of the day. Wait at least 30 minutes (preferably 1 to 2 hours) after taking the medication before you eat or drink anything other than plain water.
