How much does Tymlos cost without insurance?

Tymlos prices without insurance will vary by retailer. As a guide, Tymlos subcutaneous solution (3120 mcg/1.56 mL) will typically cost around $2,200.

What is Tymlos?

Tymlos is an FDA-approved medication manufactured by Radius health, inc. It contains the prescription drug abaloparatide. Abaloparatide is a man-made parathyroid hormone that occurs naturally in the body. Abaloparatide is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who have a high risk of bone fractures, both vertebral and nonvertebral fractures. It increases bone mineral density (BMD) and bone strength.

Tymlos is not recommended to be used for more than 2 years in your lifetime. Tymlos is also not recommended for children or young adults whose bones are still growing. It is unknown if Tymlos is effective or safe for people aged 18 or younger.

What doses of Tymlos are available?

Tymlos comes as a solution inside a prefilled pen with 30 doses. It is given as a subcutaneous injection under the skin, usually once per day. A healthcare professional will show you how to inject Tymlos. Tymlos is available in one strength: 2,000 mcg/milliliter (mL). Each dose delivers 80 mcg of abaloparatide. It should be stored in a refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) before its first use. After first use, it can be stored for up to 30 days at room temperature.

Always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Tymlos active ingredients

Abaloparatide is an analog of the human parathyroid hormone that works on the parathyroid 1 receptor. It acts in the same manner as naturally occurring parathyroid hormone in your body. It works on a parathyroid receptor that results in the activation of the cAMP pathway. The cAMP pathway controls cell growth production and changes. Abaloparatide has the effect of increasing bone mineral content, which increases bone strength in your back as well as other bones.

After 18 months of treatment with either Tymlos or placebo, 1139 women moved to treatment with alendronate 70 mg, administered orally once weekly. The incidence of adverse reactions with alendronate treatment was similar in patients from both groups.

Tymlos side effects

The most common adverse effects caused by Tymlos include:

  • Reactions at the injection site
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness and spinning sensation
  • Headache
  • Increased heart rate
  • Abdominal pain
  • Tiredness

In rare instances, other side effects of abaloparatide include:

  • Increased risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer)
  • High calcium levels (hypercalcemia) – hyperparathyroidism can increase the risk of this
  • Increased urine calcium (hypercalciuria)
  • Increased calcium may also cause you to develop kidney stones (urolithiasis)
  • Feeling light-headed or faint
  • Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure when you stand up quickly)
  • Increased heart rate and palpitations
  • Bone pain or unusual body aches

Your doctor will assess the benefits of using Tymlos against your risk of side effects. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Tymlos drug interactions

Tymlos can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Treatment for psoriasis – calcipotriene, calcitriol
  • Treatment for heart problems – digitoxin, digoxin
  • This drug has a boxed warning, the most serious warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – because of the risk of bone cancer, it is not recommended that you use Tymlos for more than 2 years throughout your lifetime. You also should not use other parathyroid medications, such as teriparatide, while you are taking Tymlos

This list is not exhaustive and other drugs may interact with Tymlos. Inform your healthcare professional about all the medicines you take, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Tymlos contraindications

You should not use Tymlos if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient abaloparatide
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Tymlos
  • Are a young child or adult as your bones may still be growing

Talk to your doctor before using Tymlos if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Tymlos
  • Have Paget’s disease or any other bone disease
  • Have high blood levels of calcium or alkaline phosphatase
  • Have hyperparathyroidism
  • Have bone cancer
  • Have radiation treatment involving your bones
  • Have a kidney stone
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
