What is Creon?

Creon is a medication prescribed to children and adults whose pancreases don’t make enough enzymes to digest food (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency). Your pancreas is an organ found next to your stomach. It helps you digest food by releasing enzymes into your digestive system. These enzymes are substances that help you break down the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in your food into smaller molecules. This allows your body to absorb and make use of your digested food.

You can have problems digesting food if your pancreas doesn’t make enough digestive enzymes (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency). This could be caused by a problem affecting your pancreas, like long term inflammation of your pancreas (chronic pancreatitis), or by medical conditions like cystic fibrosis.

If your pancreas doesn’t produce enough digestive enzymes to properly digest your food, you may not get the calories and nutrition you need. This can cause weight loss, fatigue, anemia, bleeding disorders, and bone disease. Over time it can lead to conditions like diabetes.

This is where Creon helps. It’s a pancreatic enzyme supplement that contains the digestive enzymes your body is missing. You take Creon as you eat or just after you’ve eaten a meal. The granules inside the capsule release digestive enzymes into your stomach, where they help you digest the food you’ve just eaten.

Creon active ingredients

The active ingredient in Creon is called pancreatin. It’s a mix of amylase, lipase, and protease digestive enzymes. These are natural digestive enzymes that help you break down the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in your food into smaller molecules. This means they can be more easily absorbed by your body, ensuring you get the calories and nutrients you need. The amylase, lipase, and protease enzymes in Creon are derived from pig pancreases.

Creon side effects & Creon drug interactions

As with any medication, Creon can cause side effects. Not everyone will get side effects, or the same ones though. The most common side effects caused by Creon include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Flatulence (gas) and bloating
  • Frequent or abnormal bowel movements
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness

  • Decreases in blood sugar (hypoglycemia)

In rare instances, Creon can cause more serious side effects, including:

  • A rare bowel disorder called fibrosing colonopathy that may require surgery
  • An increase in blood uric acid levels that can cause joint swelling and pain (gout)
  • Irritation of the inside of your mouth if you don’t swallow Creon properly

Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements as they will need to consider any potential Creon interactions before prescribing it.
