What is Cymbalta?

Cymbalta is an antidepressant medication. It’s prescribed to treat major depressive disorder in adults, as well as generalized anxiety disorder, fibromyalgia, diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, and chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Major depressive disorder, usually just called depression, is a mental health disorder. It causes episodes of depression that can interfere with your daily life. These depressive episodes can last for weeks at a time, sometimes for longer. Depression can also cause feelings of worthlessness and guilt, poor attention, low energy levels, a lack of interest in activities you previously enjoyed, and suicidal thoughts.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder that causes excessive and exaggerated worry about everyday life events. It can cause fatigue, interfere with sleep, alter your mood, and can make it difficult to work or study.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes widespread pain over your body.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain is another form of chronic pain, it’s caused by nerve damage due to diabetes.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain is long-lasting pain felt in the muscles, bones, and joints. It can be caused by a range of injuries, diseases, and psychological conditions, and is usually felt in a specific body part. If the pain is widespread it may be classed as fibromyalgia.

Cymbalta helps with these conditions in a variety of ways:

  • Depression and GAD are treated by increasing levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in your brain. These substances influence your thoughts, mood, and emotions. Increasing levels of them is associated with reductions in depression and anxiety.
  • Cymbalta also acts as an analgesic, reducing the pain you feel. It likely does this by reducing the sensitivity of your nerves to pain and by blocking the way pain signals are sent around your body.

Cymbalta active ingredients

The active ingredient in Cymbalta is called duloxetine. This is a type of antidepressant called a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It works by increasing levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters that allow communication between neurons and regulate your brain function.

Usually, any excess serotonin and norepinephrine are quickly re-absorbed by the neurons that create it (uptake). Duloxetine stops this happening (reuptake inhibition), causing concentrations of serotonin and norepinephrine to build up in the brain. Increasing levels of these two neurotransmitters can ease the symptoms of depression and GAD.

Duloxetine also appears to reduce the intensity of pain you feel. It alters the balance of charged sodium atoms within your nerves, reducing their sensitivity to pain and dampening pain signals sent through your body.

Cymbalta side effects & Cymbalta drug interactions

The side effects that occur most regularly with Cymbalta, experienced by around 1 in 10 people, include headaches, drowsiness, nausea, a dry mouth, a lack of appetite, insomnia, a reduced sex drive, and problems orgasming. In rarer cases, Cymbalta can cause more serious side effects. These can include an increase in suicidal thoughts and behaviors, allergic reactions to the medication, and liver failure. Your physician will assess your risk of side effects versus the benefits of Cymbalta.

When you take Cymbalta alongside other medications they can sometimes interact. When this happens side effects can become more likely and the medication may not work as it should. Medications that are known or thought to interact with Cymbalta include:

  • Other medications that can increase serotonin levels, like other SSRI and SNRI antidepressants, tramadol, tryptophan, or St John’s Wort
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), used as antidepressants and antibiotics
  • Medicines that cause sleepiness, like strong painkillers, benzodiazepines, antipsychotics, phenobarbital, and antihistamines
  • Medicines which thin your blood or prevent it from clotting, like anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents

Make sure you tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, as well as those mentioned above, including any vitamins or dietary supplements.
