What is Dalvance?

Dalvance is an antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial skin infections in adults. It comes as a powder that is mixed with a liquid to form a solution. This solution is administered through an intravenous infusion directly into a vein.

It’s used specifically to treat a range of skin infections called skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs). These can include infections in the surface of the skin like impetigo, as well as more complicated infections in burns, and infections in deep tissues like in abscesses or ulcers. The medication kills many of the bacteria that cause these infections, including strains of bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics.

Dalvance active ingredients

The active ingredient in Dalvance is called dalbavancin. Dalbavancin kills strains of bacteria that can cause SSSIs. It does so by attaching itself to bacterial cells and stopping them from producing cell walls. This makes the bacteria more vulnerable to attack by your immune system and less able to survive in your body.

Dalvance side effects & Dalvance drug interactions

As with other medications, Dalvance can cause side effects in some people. Not everyone will experience side effects though or have the same ones if they do. The most likely side effects Dalvance can cause are nausea, headaches, diarrhea, skin rashes, and itchiness. These side effects occurred in less than 10% of patients in clinical trials, however. In rarer cases, Dalvance can cause more serious side effects. These can include allergic reactions, anemia, bronchospasm, and an increased likelihood of C. difficile infections that can cause stomach pain and diarrhea.
