What is Orbactiv?

Orbactiv contains the prescription medicine oritavancin, an antibiotic injection used to treat skin and skin structure infections caused by bacteria in adults. Orbactiv should only be used for the treatment or prevention of infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that will be treatable with Orbactiv.

Orbactiv will be injected directly into a vein by a healthcare professional. Orbactiv is given slowly over 3 hours as a single dose. Orbactiv can affect the results of certain other medical tests for up to 5 days after your injection. Inform any doctor who treats you that you have been treated with this medicine. Also, contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after being given Orbactiv.

Orbactiv active ingredients

Orbactiv is an antibacterial drug produced from naturally occurring material. In tests, the effectiveness of Orbactiv against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus depends on the concentration of Orbactiv used. Oritavancin works by stopping the formation of the bacterial cell wall, and by weakening the strength of the bacterial cell wall. This inevitably causes the bacteria cell to die.

Orbactiv side effects

The most common side effects caused by Orbactiv include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Fever, chills
  • Itching
  • Skin infections
  • Headache

In rare instances, Orbactiv can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Severe stomach pain, watery or bloody diarrhea
  • Tenderness, pain, redness, swelling, or warmth anywhere in your body

Your doctor will assess the benefits of using Orbactiv against your risk of side effects.

Orbactiv drug interactions

Orbactiv can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Treatments for cancer – abemaciclib. avapritinib, cabozantinib, encorafenib, ribociclib
  • Vaccines – BCG, cholera, typhoid
  • Female sex hormone – estradiol
  • Blood thinners – heparin, warfarin
  • Opioid pain killers – hydrocodone, oxycodone

This list is not exhaustive and other drugs may interact with Orbactiv.

Orbactiv warning and precautions

You should not use Orbactiv if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient oritavancin
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Orbactiv
  • Are using “unfractionated” heparin within 5 days after your receive Orbactiv
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are younger than 18 years old

Talk to your doctor before using Orbactiv if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Orbactiv
  • Have had an allergic reaction to medicines such as dalbavancin, telavancin, or vancomycin
  • Use blood thinners and have routine “INR” or prothrombin time tests
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
