NiceRx verifies your eligibility for medication assistance and notifies you if you are pre-qualified. The pharmaceutical company provides your medication for free, and you only pay our service fee.

  • Submit documents

We will request documents to be submitted by you and your healthcare provider that are required by the pharmaceutical company to complete your enrollment.

What is Dexilant?

Dexilant is a medication that reduces levels of stomach acid (also called gastric acid). Taken to heal erosive esophagitis, the medication also provides relief from heartburn caused by erosive esophagitis or by non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dexilant is taken orally, usually as a capsule. Dexilant helps with erosive esophagitis and heartburn by reducing the level of acid in your stomach. This makes it less likely that the acid will rise up into your esophagus.

Erosive esophagitis is a disease that causes inflammation in your esophagus – the tube that connects your throat to your stomach. The most common cause of the disease is stomach acid flowing out of the stomach and into the esophagus. It can cause pain and a burning sensation in the upper chest known as heartburn or acid reflux. Heartburn can also be caused by other stomach conditions, where acid escapes from your stomach into the esophagus.

Dexilant active ingredients

The active ingredient in Dexilant is called dexlansoprazole. Dexlansoprazole is a type of drug known as a proton pump inhibitor. When swallowed, it binds to the proton pump system in the stomach. This system is one of the last stages in the process that produces stomach acid. By binding with the proton pump system, dexlansoprazole blocks it, stopping the process and reducing the production of stomach acid.

Dexilant side effects & Dexilant drug interactions

Like all medications, Dexilant can cause side effects. Not everyone will get side effects though or experience the same ones. The most common Dexilant side effects include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, flatulence, and upper respiratory chest infections. More serious side effects are rarer, reported by less than 2% of patients in clinical trials. Some of these include chest pain and heart arrhythmia, tinnitus, muscle cramps, migraines, and insomnia.

This isn’t a full list of all the side effects that Dexilant can cause. For more details see the patient leaflet that comes with your medication. If you have any concerns about Dexilant side effects, talk to your physician or a pharmacist.

Dexilant can interact with other medications, changing how it and the other medications work, and making side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements. In particular, tell them if you’re taking:

  • Drugs that are dependent on a certain stomach pH level to be absorbed properly, like the HIV protease inhibitor atazanavir, ampicillin esters, digoxin, iron salts, or ketoconazole
  • Warfarin
  • Methotrexate
  • Tacrolimus
  • Clopidogrel

Dexilant warnings & precautions

Don’t take Dexilant if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient dexlansoprazole
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients found in Dexilant (listed in the leaflet which comes with the medication)
  • Are under 18 years of age

Talk to your physician before taking Dexilant if you:

  • Have a moderate or severe liver condition
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are over 65 years of age
