What is Epidiolex?
Epidiolex is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Greenwich Biosciences Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of GW Pharmaceuticals plc. Epidiolex is the first and only FDA‑approved prescription cannabinoid.
Epidiolex (cannabidiol) is indicated for the treatment of seizures associated with rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), Dravet syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in patients 1 year of age and older. It is not known if Epidiolex is safe and effective in children under 1 year of age.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a chemical component of the Cannabis plant, more commonly known as marijuana. CBD does not cause the high that comes from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It is THC that is the main psychoactive component of marijuana. Under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), CBD is currently a Schedule I substance because it is a chemical component of the cannabis plant.
What doses of Epidiolex are available?
Epidiolex is available in oral solution form, in the following doses: 100 mg/mL.
Please refer to the medication guide and instructions for use for additional important information. Always speak with your caregivers about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
Epidiolex active ingredients
Epidiloex contains cannabidiol (CBD) as the active ingredient.
Epidiolex side effects
The most common side effects of Epidiolex in clinical trials compared to placebo include:
- Somnolence, sedation
- Loss of appetite, diarrhea
- Transaminase elevations (increase in liver enzymes)
- Tiredness, malaise, and asthenia
- Insomnia, sleep problems, and poor quality sleep
In rare instances, Epidiolex can cause more serious adverse reactions. These can include:
- Hepatocellular injury – concomitant use of valproate and higher doses of Epidiolex increases the risk of transaminase elevations
- Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Withdrawal of antiepileptic drugs – Epidiolex should be withdrawn gradually to minimize the risk of increased seizure frequency and status epilepticus
Your doctor will assess the benefits of using Epidiolex against your risk of side effects. Patients are encouraged to report negative side effects or adverse reactions of Epidiolex to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.
Epidiolex drug interactions
Epidiolex can interact with other medications. These include:
- Moderate or strong inhibitors of CYP3A4 or CYP2C19
- Strong inducers of CYP3A4 or CYP2C19
- Substrates of CYP1A2 and CYP2B6
This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Epidiolex. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter, and other drugs you take. Also tell them about any vitamins, herbs, and supplements you use.
You should not use Epidiolex if you:
- Are allergic to the active ingredient cannabidiol
- Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Epidiolex
