What is Glyxambi?

Glyxambi is a medication used to reduce high blood sugar levels if you have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a condition where you have high blood sugar levels most of the time. Glyxambi encourages your pancreas to produce insulin for longer, helping you absorb more sugar from your blood. It also causes you to lose more sugar when you urinate. These two effects can help you maintain lower blood sugar levels. Glyxambi is swallowed as a pill, usually once a day.

Sugar is released into your blood when you eat and digest food. The sugar is transported around your body and used by your cells. A hormone called insulin helps your cells absorb the sugar from your blood. But if you have type 2 diabetes, you may not produce enough insulin, you may become resistant to insulin, or both. This limits the amount of sugar your cells can absorb and causes your blood sugar to be too high.

Having high blood sugar levels can make you feel hungry and thirsty, can make you urinate more often, lose weight, feel tired, and can give you sores that don’t heal.  Over time it can cause more serious health problems, including nerve damage, heart disease, strokes, kidney failure, blindness, and poor blood flow that can lead to amputations.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, making up around 90% of cases of diabetes. It’s brought on most often by obesity and a lack of exercise. It can be treated by taking exercise, changing your diet, losing weight, and by taking a medication that can help lower your blood sugar like Glyxambi.

Glyxambi active ingredients

Glyxambi contains two active ingredients, empagliflozin and linagliptin. They help to lower your blood sugar in different ways. The dual action of these ingredients means you absorb more sugar from your blood and lose more when you urinate.

Empagliflozin increases the amount of sugar in your urine. An enzyme called SGLT2 reabsorbs sugar from your urine to allow your body to use as much of the sugar you eat as possible. But empagliflozin blocks the SGLT2 enzyme. This limits the amount of sugar you absorb from your urine and means you lose more when you urinate.

Linagliptin increases the amount of insulin you produce after you’ve eaten. When you digest food, you release digestive hormones that make your pancreas secrete insulin. As you continue to digest your food, these digestive hormones are broken down by an enzyme called DPP-4 to allow your levels of insulin to fall again. Linagliptin stops this from happening. It blocks the DPP-4 enzyme breaking down these digestive hormones, keeping them active for longer, making you produce more insulin.
