What is Invokana?

Invokana is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It’s usually prescribed together with exercise and diet changes to help manage blood sugar levels. Invokana helps with type 2 diabetes by increasing the amount of sugar that’s removed from your body in your urine. This helps to keep your blood sugar levels lower. Invokana is taken orally as a tablet swallowed with water.

No one is born with type 2 diabetes. You develop it throughout your life as you age, with it being caused by a combination of genetics, age, gender, ethnicity, weight, and diet.

When you eat and food is digested, sugar is released and taken up by your body. The sugar is absorbed into your blood so it can be transported to where it’s needed. A hormone called insulin then helps your cells take this sugar from your blood. However, with type 2 diabetes, a lack of insulin, or insulin no longer working effectively as it should, causes you to have too much sugar in your blood. Having high blood sugar can make you feel hungry, thirsty, and tired. But, over time, high blood sugar can have more serious consequences. It can cause a range of health problems, including heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.

Invokana active ingredients

The active ingredient in Invokana is called canagliflozin. It helps to lower your blood sugar by blocking a process in your body that reabsorbs sugar (glucose) from your urine. This increases the amount of sugar in your urine and causes you to lose more than you would normally do when you urinate. Used alongside exercise and improvements in your diet, and sometimes other diabetes medications, canagliflozin can help you maintain a lower blood sugar level.

Invokana side effects & Invokana drug interactions

Invokana causes side effects in some people. Not everyone that takes Invokana will experience side effects though or get the same ones. The side effects caused most often by Invokana (occurring in around 10% of people taking it) include nausea, constipation, genital yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and hypoglycemia. In rarer cases, Invokana can cause more serious side effects, like allergic reactions, kidney failure, and a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. These side effects are uncommon, and your physician will judge your risk and suitability for Invokana.

When Invokana interacts with other medications, it can change how it works. Sometimes side effects can become more likely. It’s crucial to tell your physician if you’re taking:

  • Other antidiabetic drugs
  • Medications used to lower your blood pressure
  • Carbamazepine, phenytoin, or phenobarbital to control seizures
  • Efavirenz or ritonavir to treat HIV infection
  • Rifampicin to treat tuberculosis
  • Cholestyramine to reduce cholesterol
  • Digoxin or digitoxin used to treat certain heart problems
  • The blood thinner dabigatran
  • St John’s wort
