What is Levothroid?

Levothroid is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Abbott. Levothroid is used to treat hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid). It provides or replaces more thyroid hormone, normally produced by the thyroid gland. Levothroid is also used to treat other thyroid problems such as goiter (an enlarged thyroid gland) and thyroid cancer. Levothroid is not recommended for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss.

Typical symptoms of low thyroid hormone levels include tiredness, myalgia, constipation, weight gain, slow heartbeat, or feeling cold.

What doses of Levothroid are available?

Levothroid is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 25 mcg.

Take Levothroid orally once daily on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast with a full glass of water. Your dose will be based on your age, body weight, medical condition, test results, and your response to treatment.

Certain drugs such as cholestyramine, colestipol, antacids, sucralfate, simethicone, calcium supplements, orlistat, and sevelamer, may reduce the amount of thyroid hormone that is absorbed by your body. Separate these drugs from levothroid by taking them at least 4 hours apart.

Please read the full drug information and always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
