What is Myrbetriq?
Myrbetriq is a prescription medication used to treat an overactive bladder in adults. An overactive bladder is a condition where you feel the need to urinate often and sometimes suddenly. You may feel a combination of:
- Needing to urinate often (increased urinary frequency)
- Suddenly needing to urinate (urinary urgency)
- Losing control of when you want to urinate (urgency incontinence)
These symptoms can negatively affect your life, sometimes for years. They can interrupt your sleep, disrupt your working life, affect your confidence and your wellbeing. The condition can affect men and women of any age. It more often affects women and becomes more common with age.
An overactive bladder can be triggered by a range of causes. It often involves the muscle tissue in the wall of your bladder (called the detrusor urinae muscle). This muscle is relaxed as your bladder fills, then it contracts and squeezes when you urinate. With an overactive bladder, your bladder muscles can contract more often and when your bladder isn’t full. This can cause the symptoms of needing to urinate often, suddenly needing to urinate, and not being able to control your urination.
Myrbetriq helps with this as it relaxes your bladder muscles, providing relief from the symptoms of an overactive bladder. It’s usually taken as a slow-release tablet which is swallowed with water.

Myrbetriq active ingredients
The active ingredient in Myrbetriq is called mirabegron. Mirabegron relaxes the muscles in the wall of your bladder (detrusor urinae muscle) to reduce the symptoms of an overactive bladder. It does this by attaching itself to areas on the surface of the muscles called receptors (β3-adrenergic receptors). These receptors are stimulated by mirabegron, and they start a process which relaxes the bladder muscles.
Myrbetriq side effects & Myrbetriq drug interactions
Myrbetriq can cause side effects, although there is no guarantee you will experience any. The most common side effects caused by Myrbetriq affect around 1 in 10 people. They include an increased heart rate (tachycardia), nausea, headaches, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, and an increased chance of getting urinary tract infections.
Unfortunately, in some instances you could experience more severe side effects. The most serious include an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation), affecting around 1 in 100 people, and a severe rise in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis), affecting around 1 in 1,000 people.
When you take medications together, sometimes they can interact with each other. When this happens they can become less effective and side effects may be more likely. Medications that are known or thought to interact with Myrbetriq include:
- Thioridazine, for various mental illnesses
- Imipramine or desipramine, for depression
- Propafenone or flecainide, for an abnormal heart rhythm
- Digoxin, for heart failure or an abnormal heart rhythm
- Other medications for an abnormal heart rhythm, like quinidine, sotalol, procainamide, ibutilide, flecainide, dofetilide, or amiodarone
- Dabigatran etexilate, to reduce the risk of blood clots
- Anti-infectives, like pentamidine, moxifloxacin, erythromycin, or clarithromycin
- Antipsychotic medicines, like thioridazine, mesoridazine, haloperidol, or chlorpromazine
- Medications for allergic rhinitis

Don’t take Myrbetriq if you:
- Are allergic to the active ingredient mirabegron
- Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Myrbetriq (listed in the leaflet which comes with the medication)
- If you have high blood pressure that is not controlled
- Are under 18 years of age
- Are pregnant or trying to become pregnant
Talk to your physician before taking Myrbetriq if you:
- Take any other medications for an overactive bladder
- Have trouble emptying your bladder or have a weak urine stream
- Have any liver or kidney problems
- Have an ECG (heart tracing) abnormality called QT prolongation
- Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
