What is Novolog Flexpen?

Novolog Flexpen (prefilled insulin pen) is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Novo Nordisk. Novolog is a rapid-acting insulin analog used to improve the control of blood sugar levels in adults and children with diabetes mellitus.

What doses of Novolog Flexpen are available?

Novolog Flexpen is available in 10 mL vials, 3 mL PenFill cartridges, 3 mL NovoLog FlexPen, and 3 mL NovoLog FlexTouch. Each presentation contains 100 Units of insulin aspart per mL (U-100).

Novolog is given as a subcutaneous injection immediately before the start of a meal. Do not mix or dilute NovoLog FlexPen with any other insulin if you use it with an infusion pump. Store unopened NovoLog FlexPen in the refrigerator and use until the expiration date, or store at room temperature and use within 28 days.

Novolog Flexpen side effects

The most common side effects of Novolog Flexpen in clinical trials include:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Local injection site reactions
  • Lipodystrophy
  • Rash and pruritus
  • Weight gain

In rare instances, Novolog Flexpen can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Low potassium – leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, increased thirst or urination, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness
  • Severe, life-threatening, including anaphylaxis, may occur with insulin products
  • Fluid retention and heart failure when used with thiazolidinediones
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) – increased thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, and fruity breath odor

Get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Novolog Flexpen drug interactions

Novolog Flexpen can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Drugs that affect glucose metabolism
  • Anti-adrenergic drugs – beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine, and reserpine

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Novolog Flexpen. Make sure you tell your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbs you take.

Novolog Flexpen contraindications

You should not use Novolog Flexpen if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient insulin aspart
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Novolog Flexpen
  • Have hypoglycemia
  • Are a child with type 1 diabetes under 2 years of age
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor before using Novolog Flexpen if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Novolog Flexpen
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have low potassium levels
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
