What is Prolensa?
Prolensa is a prescription medication given to adults after cataract surgery to help reduce inflammation and pain. You take the medication by dropping it into your eye using the dropper bottle it comes in. Prolensa is typically taken once a day, beginning on the day before your operation, and then continuing for 14 days afterward. Although always make sure you take your Prolensa exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Prolensa active ingredients
The active ingredient in Prolensa is called bromfenac. It’s a non-steroidal inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can reduce inflammation and pain in your eyes. Bromfenac works by reducing the production of a natural substance in your body called prostaglandin. Prostaglandins are used by your immune system to trigger inflammation and to transmit pain signals.
When you drop Prolensa into your eyes, the bromfenac contains attaches to enzymes in your eye cells called COX enzymes, stopping them from working. These enzymes are used to produce prostaglandin. By stopping them working, bromfenac causes less prostaglandin to be made, reducing your pain and inflammation.
Prolensa side effects & Prolensa drug interactions
The most common side effects caused by Prolensa include:
- Eye pain
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
- A feeling that something is in your eye (foreign body sensation)
- Inflammation in your eye just behind your cornea and in front of your lens (anterior chamber inflammation)
In rare instances, Prolensa can cause more serious side effects, like:
- A condition called keratitis where your cornea (the clear dome on the front surface of your eye) becomes inflamed. In severe cases this can damage the cornea and could lead to vision loss
- Severe allergic reactions to the medication that can cause anaphylaxis
- A slower rate of healing of your eyes after your surgery
- Increased bleeding from your eyes after your surgery
Prolensa can also interact with other medications. You should make sure that you tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins, and herbal and dietary supplements, particularly:
- Any other medications you put in your eyes
- Any other non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSADs)
- Any medications that increase your risk of bleeding, such as anticoagulants (blood thinners)
Prolensa warnings & precautions
Don’t put Prolensa into your eyes whilst wearing contact lenses. Take your contact lenses out and then wait 10 minutes after you’ve used Prolensa before you put them back in.
Prolensa isn’t suitable for everyone. Don’t take Prolensa if you are under 18 or if you are allergic to the active ingredient bromfenac or any of the other ingredients in the medication.
Talk to your doctor before taking Prolensa if you:
- Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Prolensa (see the section above)
- Have ever had an allergic reaction to another non-steroidal inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Have ever had an allergic reaction to a medication containing sulfates
- Have ever had an allergic reaction to a medication containing acetylsalicylic acid or phenylacetic acid derivatives
- Have had more than one cataract surgery in a short period of time
- Have ever had any problems with your cornea, including keratitis
- Have ever had any other eye problems
- Have ever had any problems with bleeding
- Have diabetes
- Have rheumatoid arthritis
- Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
- Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
*Qualifying persons may obtain medications directly from patient assistance programs without any out-of-pocket cost (or for less than $49 per medication). However, our monthly flat rate of just $49 per medication spares you the hassle of tracking down the different programs and filling out all the required paperwork for each program.

**If you do not receive medications because you were determined to be ineligible for the prescription assistance by the applicable pharmaceutical companies and you have a letter of denial, we will refund any fees you paid toward medications for which you did not qualify to receive prescription assistance (“Refund”).
To receive a refund, you must send the letter of denial to us by fax to 888-517-7444, or by e-mail to [email protected] within 30 days of your receipt of such letter. The Refund is your sole and exclusive remedy for any fees you may wish to dispute.
