What is Stelara?

Stelara is a type of medicine called an immunosuppressant that’s used to weaken part of your immune system. It’s taken to treat inflammatory diseases, specifically:

  • Moderate to severely active Crohn’s disease in adults
  • Moderate to severely active ulcerative colitis in adults
  • Moderate to severe plaque psoriasis adults and children over 12 years of age
  • Active psoriatic arthritis in adults

These four conditions are chronic inflammatory disorders. This means they’re long-lasting (chronic), that they lessen but then flare up again over time, and that their symptoms are caused mostly by inflammation.

Inflammation is a natural process that your immune system uses to clear your body of infections and to heal injuries. However, if inflammation occurs in healthy areas of your body, and if it lasts for long periods, it can cause damage and disrupt the normal functioning of your body.

Crohn’s disease is caused by inflammation of your gastrointestinal tract. This is the tube that runs from your mouth to your anus that digests and absorbs food and expels the waste. The inflammation can happen along any part of your gastrointestinal tract. It can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, weight loss, fatigue, and even anemia and arthritis.

Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers to form in your colon and rectum (your large intestine). It can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, weight loss, and anemia. Like Crohn’s disease (above), it causes inflammation in part of your gastrointestinal tract. Ulcerative colitis just affects your large intestine however, whereas Crohn’s disease affects your whole gastrointestinal tract.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that can also cause inflammation. Plaque psoriasis is a skin condition caused by a speeding up of the lifecycle of skin cells. Cells build up on the surface of your skin, resulting in red patches covered in white to silver scales. These patches can occur in a few spots or they can cover large areas of your body.

Psoriatic arthritis happens when psoriasis causes your joints to become inflamed. It can be painful, and it can cause swelling that can damage the joints over time and lead to deformation. Psoriatic arthritis can affect any joint, but it’s most common in the fingers and toes.

Stelara helps with these conditions by reducing the amount of inflammation your immune system can cause. This can provide relief from symptoms and reduce any damage chronic inflammatory diseases may cause. The medication is taken as an injection, usually given by a doctor or nurse. It can be injected under the skin (subcutaneous) or directly into a vein (intravenous).

Stelara active ingredients

The active ingredient in Stelara is ustekinumab. It’s a monoclonal antibody, which means it’s a kind of protein that binds with other specific proteins in your body. Ustekinumab works by binding with proteins produced by your immune system called cytokines. These proteins help to trigger your body’s inflammatory response. By binding with them, ustekinumab stops them from working, reducing the amount of inflammation your immune system causes.

Stelara side effects & Stelara drug interactions

Like any medication, Stelara can cause side effects. Remember that when it comes to side effects, not everyone will experience the same or get any at all. The most common side effects caused by Stelara affect around 1 in 10 people who take it. They include headaches, sore throats, sinus infections, feeling tired, feeling dizzy, redness and pain where the injection is given, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and pain in your back, muscles, and joints.

In rarer cases, Stelara can cause more serious side effects. These can include allergic reactions to the medication, inflammation of the lungs, and serious skin conditions where you have redness and loose skin over large areas of your body (erythrodermic psoriasis or exfoliative dermatitis).

As Stelara works by suppressing a part of your immune system (your inflammatory response) it can make you more susceptible to catching infections. Infections of your nose and throat are common, but you can catch more serious infections too. Your physician will assess your risk of side effects versus the benefits of taking Stelara. Talk to them if you have any concerns about side effects.

When taken at the same time, some medications can interact with each other. This can affect how they work and make certain side effects more likely. Medicines that may interact with Stelara include:

  • Other immunosuppressant drugs
  • Other psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis treatments, including UV light therapy
  • Live vaccinations
  • CYP450 substrate medicines, like warfarin or cyclosporine

Make sure to tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, as well as those mentioned above, including any vitamins or dietary supplements.
