What is Viagra?

Viagra is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men. It is usually taken orally as a pill before you plan to have sex.

ED, also called erectile dysfunction and impotence, is when a man can’t get or keep an erection that’s hard enough for sex. It’s a widespread issue, affecting many men. In fact, ED is the most common sexual problem reported by men. While it used to be thought of as something that only affected older men, more recent research has shown plenty of young men experience ED too.

The condition has several possible causes. Medical conditions that limit the flow of blood to the penis, like diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, are common causes. It can also be caused by psychological issues too, like performance anxiety, depression, emotional problems, and stress.

Viagra helps with ED by increasing the flow of blood to your penis. It relaxes your arteries and tissues in your penis, improving blood flow, and allowing your penis to fill with blood more easily. Viagra doesn’t give you an automatic erection, however. You need to feel desire and you may need to be stimulated. The medication then helps to turn this desire into a lasting erection.

This form of ED medication has been found to work best for men whose ED is caused by a problem with the flow of blood to the penis. It can work in some instances for men who have ED caused by psychological issues, as it can take the stress out of getting and keeping an erection. Speak to your physician if you think your ED has a psychological cause and if Viagra is right for you.

Viagra active ingredients

The active ingredient in Viagra is called sildenafil. Sildenafil helps erections by improving blood flow and making it easier for your penis to fill with blood.

It works by increasing the amount of a substance in your body called cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate). It does this by blocking the enzymes that break down cGMP, causing it to build up in your blood. cGMP relaxes muscle tissue in your arteries and in your penis. Higher levels of cGMP cause your arteries and cavities inside your penis to relax and widen. This improves blood flow and allows your penis to fill with blood more easily.

Viagra side effects & Viagra drug interactions

Viagra can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common Viagra side effects include headaches, a blocked nose, nausea, dizziness, indigestion, facial flushing, and hot flashes, and visual disturbances like blurring and color tinge to your vision. These side effects usually pass as the medication breaks down in your body.

Viagra is a safe drug for most men to use, but it can cause more serious side effects. These side effects happen more rarely, but you should be aware of them. They include allergic reactions, chest pains, sudden decreases and loss of vision, severe skin reactions, seizures, and an erection that won’t subside and lasts for four hours or more (priapism).

If you experience any of these side effects, stop taking Viagra, and seek medical attention immediately.

Make sure you tell your prescribing physician about any other medications you’re taking alongside Viagra. This is important as when you take drugs together they can work differently, potentially causing more serious side effects. Always let them know if you’re taking:

  • Medicines called nitrates, used for chest pain
  • Nitric oxide donor medications, like amyl nitrite
  • Riociguat
  • Protease inhibitors
  • Alpha-blocker medications
  • Treatments for pulmonary arterial hypertension
