What is Amitriptyline?

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that is used to treat the symptoms of depression. It is also used off-label for many uses, including anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, diabetic neuropathy, migraine prevention, and post-herpetic pain.

Amitriptyline works by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, in your brain. This is thought to help improve your mood, relieve anxiety, and help you sleep better.

Amitriptyline comes as an oral tablet that is typically taken 1 to 4 times a day. You should try and take this medication around the same time(s) each day. Your doctor will usually start you on Amitriptyline at a low dose and gradually increase it. This will help reduce your risk of side effects. Although you may feel some improvement within the first 2 weeks, it can take 4 to 6 weeks before you get the full benefit from Amitriptyline. You should not suddenly stop taking this medication without consulting with your doctor. You should be tapered off this medication gradually to help prevent withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, headache, mood swings, lack of energy, and insomnia.
