What is Neulasta?

Neulasta is a medicine given to adults to help them produce more white blood cells. It’s prescribed to patients who are undergoing cancer therapies that compromise their immune systems and put them at a greater risk of infection.

Chemotherapy works by killing fast-growing cancer cells, but it can also kill healthy cells in your body. This can include the white blood cells that help you fight infections. Because of this, chemotherapy can weaken your immune system and make you more vulnerable to catching infections.

This is where Neulasta helps. It’s a medication that boosts a type of white blood cell in your body, called a neutrophil. These white blood cells help you fight infections. Taking Neulasta alongside your chemotherapy can reduce your risk of infection by up to 94%.

Neulasta is administered by injection under your skin (subcutaneous injection). You or a caregiver can do this in your home using either a pre-filled syringe or an on-body injector. Alternatively, a healthcare provider, usually a doctor or nurse, can inject you in an outpatient setting, like an outpatient clinic. Typically, you have one injection per round of chemotherapy.

Neulasta active ingredients

The active ingredient in Neulasta is called pegfilgrastim. When you take Neulasta, pegfilgrastim stimulates your body to produce more of a white blood cell called neutrophils. These are the most abundant white blood cells in your body, and they help you fight infections.

Pegfilgrastim works by mimicking a substance naturally found in your body, called granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. It stimulates your bone marrow (the spongy tissue inside your bones that makes blood cells) causing it to produce more neutrophils.

Neulasta side effects & Neulasta drug interactions

Neulasta can cause side effects, with the most common including pain in your bones, arms and legs. In rare instances, Neulasta can cause more serious side effects, including:

  • Severe allergic reactions to the medication that can cause swelling in your face and throat, a fast heart rate, and problems with breathing
  • Swelling and rupture of your spleen, which can be fatal
  • A serious lung problem called acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) that can make it difficult to breathe
  • Kidney damage (glomerulonephritis) that can reduce your kidney function
  • A high white blood cell count (leukocytosis)
  • Capillary leak syndrome – a potentially life-threatening condition where fluid leaks from your blood vessels into the surrounding tissues
  • Inflammation of the large blood vessel in your heart aorta (aortitis)
  • Sickle cell crises – if you have sickle cell disorder it could worsen and could be fatal

Neulasta can interact with other medications. When this happens, it can change how Neulasta and the other medications work. Some side effects might also become more likely. It’s important to tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements.
