What is Riastap?
Riastap is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured from cryoprecipitate by CSL Behring GmbH.
Riastap, (Human Fibrinogen Concentrate) is a human blood coagulation factor replacement therapy indicated for the treatment of acute bleeding episodes in pediatric and adult patients with congenital fibrinogen deficiency, including afibrinogenemia and hypofibrinogenemia.
Congenital Fibrinogen Deficiency (CFD) is a rare inherited bleeding disorder in which the body’s ability to form blood clots is impaired.
The effectiveness of Riastap is based on maximum clot firmness (MCF). This is a measure of clot structural integrity that reflects the underlying effectiveness of the fibrinogen present to form a fibrin clot. Riastap is not indicated for dysfibrinogenemia.
What doses of Riastap are available?
Riastap is available as a single-dose vial containing 900 mg to 1300 mg lyophilized powder for reconstitution. Riastap should be reconstituted using water for injections.
For intravenous use only:
- Dose (mg/kg body weight) = Target level – measured level / 1.7 (mg/dL per mg/kg body weight
- Dose when fibrinogen level is unknown: 70 mg/kg body weight. Monitoring of the patient’s fibrinogen level is recommended during treatment. A target fibrinogen level of 100 mg/dL should be maintained until hemostasis is obtained. The injection rate should not exceed 5 mL per minute
Riastap is preservative-free. The unmixed powder must be stored in a refrigerator or in a dark cool place. Mixed medicine must be used within 24 hours if you keep it at room temperature.
Please see the full prescribing information and always speak with a healthcare professional about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
