What is Triumeq?

Triumeq is prescribed to adults to treat the human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1) infection. You take Triumeq as a tablet that you swallow, usually once a day.

The HIV-1 infection is a viral infection that can harm your immune system by damaging your white blood cells. It infects a type of white blood cell called T-helper or CD4 cell that helps protect you from infection. The HIV-1 virus stops these cells from working, reducing your immune system’s ability to protect you. This can lead to a disease called acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Triumeq can reduce the amount of the HIV-1 virus you have in your body (viral load). This can limit the harm to your immune system and can increase the number of T-helper white blood cells you have in your body. This helps your immune system to fight off other infections and some forms of cancer.

Triumeq active ingredients

Triumeq contains three active ingredients: abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine. The HIV-1 virus copies itself by invading your T-helper white blood cells. It inserts itself into the DNA inside the cells, then takes advantage of your natural DNA copying process to make copies of itself. Eventually, the T-cell dies, and copies of the HIV-1 virus spread to other T-cells, and the cycle continues. Triumeq stops this from happening.

Dolutegravir is a type of antiviral drug called an integrase inhibitor. It stops the HIV-1 virus from inserting itself into your DNA. Abacavir and lamivudine are antivirals called reverse transcriptase inhibitors. They stop the virus from being copied when your DNA is copied. This dual-effect makes it harder for your HIV-1 virus to copy itself. It can reduce the amount of virus you have in your body and increase the number of healthy T-cells you have.
