What is Vectibix?

Cancer is a disease where cells in the body grow, multiply and spread in an uncontrollable way. Treatment for cancer works by blocking the growth and spread of these abnormal cells. The disease can start in any part of the body. Vectibix contains the prescription medicine panitumumab, which works by binding to certain glycoproteins on both normal and abnormal cells to slow down cell growth.

Vectibix is used to treat advanced-stage colon cancer. This is where the cancer has progressed and spread beyond the colon, even after treatment. Vectibix is used only if your tumor is a wild-type RAS tumor. Your doctor will test you for this.

Vectibix active ingredients

Panitumumab binds to specific transmembrane glycoproteins on normal and tumor cells in the body. This results in an inhibition of cell growth, promotes normal cell death, a reduction in cytokine, which promotes inflammation and a reduction in vascular growth factors, which are needed to help create new blood vessels for the growth of cells. Tests have shown that panitumumab inhibits the growth and survival of certain human tumor cells, including colon and rectum cancers.

Vectibix is injected into your vein through an intravenous infusion taking up to 60 – 90 minutes to complete.  A healthcare professional will give you this injection. The injection is given once every 2 weeks with your doctor’s instructions.

Vectibix can pass into your urine, vomit, and feces for up 48hours after your injection. You must be extremely careful not to allow your body fluids to come into contact with your hands or other surfaces. Use rubber gloves while cleaning up your bodily fluids and when handling contaminated trash, laundry, or changing diapers. Soiled clothing and linens must be washed separately from other laundry. Vectibix can make you more sensitive to sunlight and cause you to sunburn more easily, therefore covering up in the sun and wearing a high SPF is important. Ideally, avoid exposure to sunlight and tanning beds.
