How do I apply for the Zemplar patient assistance program?

Applying for the Zemplar patient assistance program through NiceRx is simple. Begin by completing the enrollment application on our website. We will ask for details about your healthcare provider, your insurance plan, and your household income. This information is required by the pharmaceutical manufacturers that supply your medication. If we determine that you may be eligible for Zemplar assistance, we will handle the full enrollment process on your behalf. We will work with your healthcare provider to prepare and submit all the documents required for you to enroll. What is Zemplar?

Zemplar contains the prescription medicine paricalcitol, which is a man-made form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to balance the amount of calcium in the body, which helps keep bones, teeth, and muscles strong and healthy. Zemplar is used for the treatment of hyperparathyroidism in people who are on dialysis or have chronic kidney disease. Hyperparathyroidism is a condition where one or more of your parathyroid glands becomes overactive and releases too much parathyroid hormone.

Zemplar is given every other day or 3 times per week. The oral capsules can be taken with or without food. Zemplar injections are given as an infusion directly into a vein during dialysis. You will need regular blood checks while taking this medicine, and you may need to follow a special diet. Zemplar oral capsules are used in adults and children at least 10 years old. The injection is used in adults and children at least 5 years old.

Zemplar active ingredients

Vitamin D is normally produced in the body by the skin or obtained through your diet. Vitamin D is converted into a version that binds with vitamin D receptors (VDR) in your body. VDR is present in the parathyroid gland, intestine, kidney, and bone. This binding process helps to maintain normal parathyroid function and for the normal formation of bone.

In unhealthy kidneys, the conversion of vitamin D is reduced, causing a rise of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This causes an imbalance of calcium and phosphorous in the body, which affects the formation of healthy bone and can cause renal osteodystrophy (abnormal bone formation caused by kidney disease).

Paricalcitol has been shown to work by attaching to the vitamin D receptors (VDR), which has the same effect as vitamin D, thereby reducing the production of parathyroid hormone and allowing the formation of normal healthy bone.
